Kenilworth Upper at a glance

Superbly located between Claremont Upper, Wynberg, the Constantia Winelands and the world-renowned Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, lies the prestigious suburb of Kenilworth Upper. Although well established, Kenilworth Upper is characterised by old-world Victorian architecture, wrap-around verandahs and many Sir Herbert Baker designed properties. Favoured by many for striking the perfect balance between the hustle and bustle of city life and the laid-back lifestyle of suburbia, Kenilworth Upper is a popular, yet quiet suburb. Before the establishment of the suburb in the 1800s, the area was originally part of the Stellenberg farm, established by former Cape governor Simon van der Stel and used by the Dutch to house their hunting dogs. Although most of the ground was sold off as the years went by, the original farm, with its well-preserved homestead, is described by historians and architects as one of the most beautiful Cape Dutch houses in the Cape Peninsula. Today, this homestead, called Stellenberg Gardens, is a national monument with monastery gardens that is open to the public on specific days of the week and marvelled by many for its glorious beauty.

Another attraction that draws visitors to Kenilworth Upper is the Kenilworth Racecourse, the oldest racecourse in the country, steeped in tradition and history. Considered one of the most unique horse racing tracks in the world, Kenilworth Racecourse has become a long-time favourite amongst South Africans and overseas visitors who flock together to attend two of the most prestigious annual events on the horseracing calendar, the Queen's Plate and the J&B Met.

A popular choice for young couples and families, Kenilworth Upper is a convenient suburb to call home because of its central position which is only a 20-minute drive to The City Bowl, Cape Town Convention Centre, V & A Waterfront, and Table Mountain.

Many of the amenities on offer in this upmarket suburb include an excellent assortment of shops, restaurants, and parks that are whimsically "hidden" and well-loved by residents who enjoy exploring the verdant neighbourhood on foot.

With plush, tree-lined streets and Table Mountain as a backdrop, Kenilworth Upper provides a variety of options in terms of property and is in close proximity to some of Cape Town's top schools. Predominantly family-oriented, with a great sense of community, it is a suburb that appeals to those who want somewhere special to call home.
