Bishopscourt Village at a glance

Located beneath the eastern slopes of Table Mountain along the restored Liesbeek River Garden - and neighbouring the magnificent Kirstenbosch Gardens - lies Bishopscourt Village, one of Cape Town's smaller, most historic, beautiful suburbs.

This peaceful, leafy haven, hidden by the incredible nature that surrounds it, is conveniently located next to the M3 where it has easy access to the city, Cape Town International Airport, exclusive shopping centres and many of the best schools in the country.

An active resident's association, which began the privately funded redevelopment of the Upper Liesbeek River Garden project in 2004, is an indicator of the type of homeowner that Bishopscourt Village attracts. Today, this beautifully restored indigenous riverine and healthy river is lovingly maintained so that it is safe for children, dogs and families to enjoy picnics, walks and play.

Named after a small river in the Netherlands, the Liesbeek River was key to the original purpose of the fertile area which was first used for farming by the Dutch East India Company in 1657.

During the 1800s the land was owned by several noteworthy British settlers and changed ownership many times.

In 1929, a remarkable man named Isaac Ochberg bought the land east of Princess Avenue naming it Edinburgh Township. Arriving in the Cape in 1895, Ochberg was a penniless Ukrainian Jew who worked tirelessly to build up his business empire.

As a visionary who saw the potential in land where others didn't, he would make tracts of land habitable and even finance individuals to build their own homes. As a result, the 1930s saw the first development of suburban-type homes in Bishopscourt Village where streets like Upper Angelina, Bertha and Upper Noreen were named after Ochberg's family members.

Today, Bishopscourt Village is an exclusive and sought-after area that offers diverse property types. From original historic cottages to renovated family homes and even luxury townhouses, the area's remarkable mountain views, tranquillity, central location and exquisite greenery, ensure that property values in Bishopscourt Village are consistent and secure.
